Bicycle toolkit review: Crankbrothers Y16 (2015)

My two cents say that this is how the coolest bicycle kit looks like. It’s Crankbrother’s most recent prodigy and includes 2 version: Y12 and Y16, of which we received for testing the latter version, that has, as its name tells, a lot of tool options.

With an appearance that makes you think it’s more of a futuristic gadget, or a weapon found in the arsenal of the infamous Predator, the main pieces are two 3-point stars, each arm being, in fact, an Allen key. Also, you can notice a CO2 cartridge adapter, a chain tool, and a box filled with various screwdrivers and a Torx key, which you can remove and place instead of them tube repair essentials if you need those more.

Using the chain tool is done by inserting the two Y-shaped pieces in the two designated places as shown below.

Even though it has a compact shape, the Y16 isn’t exactly the lightest of tool kits considering its 260 grams, but, by far, it compensates by its outstanding functionality. However, it also bears the price that premium products usually do, in this case of around 50 euros, still we reckon that it’s a step worth taking for this do-all item.
